Nike restores multi-purpose courts in the Philippines for girls to play sports
Young girls in the Philippines struggle to obtain opportunities, specifically in sports.
Realizing the challenge and desiring to solve this problem, Jordan 2020 Release recently partnered with Manila-based non-governmental organization (NGO), Girls Got Game, to refurbish two multi-purpose pitches.
The NGO regularly holds sports clinics for girls who do not have access to it. To date it has helped more than 2,500 young girls across the Philippines in the 10-14 years age group, who come primarily from economically-challenged households.

Girls Got Game managing director Mariana Lopa believes that sport has the power to transform a person, a community, and even the world.
“Nike and Girls Got Game share a common purpose: Newly Jordans To move the world forward through sport. We see girls as the changemakers who have the power to improve their communities. Through our sports clinics we coach them to build confidence and realize their full potential so they can have an equitable future.”

Located at Sacred Heart Academy School in Sta. Maria Bulacan, these pitches – one outdoor and one indoor – were designed by Filipina artist and illustrator, Jill Arteche.
“Kids are made to play, yet many in the Philippines, particularly young girls, do not have access to sports,” Jino Ferrer, country marketing manager, Nike Philippines, said.
“Nike and Girls Got Game are investing in the future Ecco Women’s Shoes of kids by giving them access to tools and training they need for success, building confidence on and off the court by exposing them to positive female role models and breaking down barriers to create inclusive communities.”

The pitches were unveiled on October 11, 2021 in conjunction with the International Day Of The Girl.
The event by the United Nations is held annually to elevate girls’ voices and empower them to become the next gen changemakers.

The outdoor court, which represents the “Now”, showcases whimsical illustrations of young girls learning sports like volleyball, basketball, rugby, and football.

The indoor court, on the other hand, features the young girls’ ambitions of the “Future” by becoming doctors, leaders, and athletes – a reminder that Hobbylobbyhey their dreams are within reach.
“We hope to inspire the next generation of Filipina girls to view the refurbished courts as a symbol of their goals and dreams, and that accomplishing these, however small, is what brings a sense of achievement,” Ferrer added.
