Weekend high school sports: Nikes go 2-2 against stellar competition in Cedar Rapids
Class 1A’s top-ranked and defending state champion Notre Dame High School volleyball team went 2-2 in the Westside Invitational Saturday in Cedar Rapids.
The Nikes beat Class 5A’s 14th-ranked Iowa City West, 21-18, 22-20, lost to Class 2A’s top-ranked Dike-New Hartford, 21-8, 21-13, beat Cedar Rapids Washington, 16-21, 21-17, 15-7 and lost to Class 3A’s seventh-ranked West Liberty, 29-27, 25-16.
Josie Bentz had 38 kills, 22 digs and three aces for the Nikes, New Jordan while Gabby Deery had 36 kills, 20 digs and three aces, Maisey Belger had five kills and five digs, Megan Harrell had two kills and 11 digs, Taryn Stephens had 30 digs and one ace, Jenna Bentz had four kills, 18 digs, two aces, and 79 assist, Ava Parkins had 24 digs and two aces and Abby Korschgen had three kills and two digs.
New London wins at Davis County
Class 1A’s 12th-ranked New London went 4-1 to win the championship at the Davis County Tournament in Bloomfield.
New London beat Van Buren County, 21-14, 21-7, lost to Albia, 17-21, 21-17, 3-15, beat Centerville, 21-6, 21-5, beat Central Lee in the semifinals, 27-25, 17-25, 15-11 and beat Davis County in the championship match, 25-18, 25-20.Elly Manning had 49 assists and 30 digs for the Tigers, while Natalie Burden had 53 kills, 30 digs, five blocks and four aces, Sneakerheads2020 Sophie Malott had 24 kills, 34 digs, one block and six aces, Tysann Gipple had eight kills, 10 digs and four blocks, Emma Nye had six kills, 95 digs and four aces, Aliyah Christensen had six kills, 46 assists, 50 digs, three blocks and seven aces, Camryn Lair had five kills, 12 digs and four blocks and Morgan Jones had two kills and 11 digs.
Central Lee goes 3-1 at Davis County
Central Lee went 3-0, placing first in its pool play, beating Cardinal, 21-13, 2-16, Keokuk, 25-21, 22-20, 15-9, and Davis County, 21-19, 21-17. Central Lee then lost to New London in the gold bracket, 25-27, 25-17, 11-15.
Makayla Morrison had 43 kills and 45 digs for the Lady Hawks, while Macy Watkins had 16 kills and 109 assists, Maura Watkins had 14 kills, Meghan Hopp had 39 kills, Alivia Myhre had 11 kills, Alix Congdon had 45 digs and Sophie Turner had 22 digs.
Holy Trinity goes 3-2 at Pella Tournament
Class 1A’s fifth-ranked Holy Trinity went 3-2 in the Pella Tournament. The Crusaders beat Knoxville, 21-18, 11-21, 15-9, lost to Class 5A’s top-ranked Iowa 2021 Yeezy Boost City Liberty, 13-21, 13-21, beat Class 4A’s eighth-ranked Bondurant-Farrar, 21-16, 12-21, 15-12, beat Mediapolis, 21-12, 21-15 and lost to Class 4A’s 10th-ranked Pella, 13-21, 21-17, 11-15.
Natalie Randolph had 39 kills, 30 assists, 18 digs, one block and three assists for the Crusaders. Also for Holy Trinity, Kassi Randolph had 23 kills, 45 assists, 35 digs, two blocks and one ace, Kayla Box had two kills, five digs and six blocks, Teagan Denning had 14 digs and three aces, Anna Sobczak had 21 assists, 44 digs and five aces, Teagan Snaadt had 14 digs, Mary Kate Bendlage had 10 kills, 21 digs, one block and one assist and Brooke Mueller had 17 kills, 24 digs, one block and five aces.
